Subject: Resolution Designating “National Library Week”

In the near future, we plan to introduce a resolution declaring April 13-19, 2014, as “National Library Week” in Pennsylvania.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April that celebrates the valuable contributions of libraries, librarians, and library workers, and the services and resources they provide to people of all ages throughout the United States. Many different types of libraries participate including school, public, academic and special libraries. Libraries now meet the demands of a technology-based society, in addition to providing books, by offering e-books and audio books, computer stations, and other digital resources. The 2014 theme of “National Library Week” – “Lives change @ your library” – helps illustrate this fact, in addition to the fact that libraries open new worlds to children and adults alike, while acting as a place where people and families can go to reconnect and engage with one another.

Please join us in co-sponsoring a resolution celebrating “National Library Week” in the Commonwealth to help encourage all residents to visit their local library to take advantage of the wonderful resources and world of knowledge and opportunity offered to them.
