MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 10, 2014 12:15 PM
From: Representative Nick Miccarelli
To: All House members
Subject: Establish PA Military Community Enhancement Commission within the PA Department of Military Affairs

In the near future, Rep. Readshaw and I plan to introduce legislation to statutorily establish the Pennsylvania Military Community Enhancement Commission within the PA Department of Military Affairs.

The purpose of my proposal is to establish a mechanism to attentively examine and perpetually advocate for Pennsylvania’s military installations.

As you may recall, Governor Corbett signed an executive order establishing this type of commission which I strongly believe is so important that we should permanently establish it in statute. My proposal will codify this commission under Title 51 (Military Affairs).

Pennsylvania currently has 12 military installations in the state and according to our own state Department of Labor and Industry these military installations add nearly $30 billion to our state economy and account for more than 200,000 jobs.

I believe it is crucial that we preserve these installations and the military and civilian men and women who both work and live at or near these installations. These installations are vital to our local economies and play a major role in our national security.

The commission would be composed of nine members, with the four leaders of the General Assembly each having an appointment and the other 5 appointed by the Governor. The Governor would also appoint an executive director who is employed by the Department of Community and Economic Development.

Please consider joining me in working towards preserving our current military installations by sponsoring this legislation.
