| Subject: | Electronic Game Calls for Deer |
| In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation to provide for the expansion of electronic game calls in the Commonwealth to include deer calls. In today’s world where the use of advancing technology is so commonplace, now is the time to provide our sportsmen and women with the opportunity to use electronic calls for deer in order to improve their safety and enhance their outdoors experience. While I understand that some traditionalists are hesitant to embrace the use of electronic calls, the fact is that electronic calls are legally being used to hunt predators in Pennsylvania without issue. Furthermore, non-electronic calls are widely, and legally, used to hunt deer and other big game throughout the commonwealth. Electronic game calls do not substantially alter the already common practice of attracting game through calls, but rather adds to the sport through increased safety. Electronic calls allow hunters to maintain a safe distance away from the sound, helping to reduce confusion and accidents. Additionally, this session, I introduced legislation supported by the Game Commission to allow the Youth Mentored Hunting Program to extend to adults. That effort was successfully passed into law as Act 7 of 2013, and much of that success came from the desire to get more individuals out into fields to experience hunting first hand and possibly gain a lifelong interest. I believe electronic game calls present that same opportunity to get individuals out into the field and experience hunting in a way that drives interest.
