Subject: Condolence Resolution for President of Temple University JoAnne Epps
 
In the near future, we will be introducing a condolence resolution honoring the life and service of President of Temple University JoAnne Epps of Cheltenham, Montgomery County who passed away suddenly on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at the age of 72 years old. A graduate of Yale Law School, President Epps served Temple University with tremendous distinction since 1985 when she joined Temple Law School as a faculty member. She would later assume the positions of Dean of Temple Law School in 2008 and Executive Vice President and Provost of Temple University in 2016 before stepping up to lead the University as Acting President in April of this year. In addition to her work as an administrator, President Epps was a renowned legal scholar focusing on criminal procedure, evidence, and trial advocacy and earned national recognition for her contributions towards furthering the advancement of women and people of color in both the legal profession and community.

President Epps was also a leader outside of her roles at Temple University, serving the city of Philadelphia in a variety of capacities including her service as inaugural chair of Philadelphia’s Police Oversight Board, her appointment by the US District Court to monitor the city’s compliance with the settlement of Bailey v. City of Philadelphia in 2011, her service as board president of the Defender Association of Philadelphia from 1999 to 2006, and in 2001 her appointment by Philadelphia Mayor John Street to serve as chair of the Mayor’s Task Force on Police Discipline. President Epps also left a lasting impact statewide and was named a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania in 2012 by Governor Tom Corbett for her significant contributions to the Commonwealth.
