| Subject: | Requiring Text or Email Reminders for an Upcoming Vehicle Registration Expiration |
| In 2016, PennDOT stopped issuing registration stickers for license plates, ending a common way for drivers to remember when their vehicle registration expires. While drivers still receive a mail reminder, it may arrive months before the expiration date of their vehicle registration, resulting in some drivers unknowingly operating their vehicle with an expired registration. Data from the Pennsylvania State Police showed that tens of thousands more Pennsylvanians received citations for an expired registration after PennDOT stopped issuing registration stickers. It is crucial that PennDOT implements a more modern and convenient system to remind drivers when their registration is about to expire. That is why I plan to introduce legislation that would address this issue by requiring PennDOT to send a reminder text or email to the driver, if they have access to the necessary information, notifying them that their registration is due to expire soon. In addition, the phone number or email address must be provided voluntarily, and it cannot be provided to third parties by PennDOT. This simple reminder would be a valuable tool in ensuring that drivers are aware of their renewal deadline and avoid costly fines.
