Subject: Preventing the Sale of Driver and Vehicle Information for Profit

Since 2013, PennDOT has been able to provide personal information to individuals and businesses who can then profit directly from the sale of this information. PennDOT collects and maintains a significant amount of personal information on drivers, meaning registrations, titles, and security interests are being acquired by third parties and sold, putting Pennsylvanians’ personal information at risk.

That is why I plan to introduce legislation that would prevent third parties from selling personal information they acquire from PennDOT. This would help to protect the privacy and security of Pennsylvania drivers, providing them with greater control over their personal information.

In addition, this legislation removes PennDOT’s ability to impose a $2 fee on the sale of driver and vehicle information to third parties. The removal of this fee, which is used to pay for web services, will ensure that any fees incurred from the release of personal information will go towards transportation projects.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to help ensure that Pennsylvania residents' personal information is protected.
